Countries are becoming more and more similar because people are able to buy the same products anywhere in the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
It is said that countries are becoming similar to each other because of the global spread of the same products, which are now available for purchase almost anywhere. I strongly believe that this modern development is largely detrimental to culture and traditions worldwide.
A country’s history, language and ethos are all inextricably bound up in its manufactured artefacts. If the relentless advance of international brands into every corner of the world continues, these bland packages might one day completely oust the traditional objects of a nation, which would be a loss of richness and diversity in the world, as well as the sad disappearance of the manifestations of a place’s character. What would a Japanese tea ceremony be without its specially crafted teapot, or a Fijian kava ritual without its bowl made from a certain type of tree bark.
Let us not forget either that traditional products, whether these be medicines, cosmetics, toys, clothes, utensils or food, provide employment for local people. The spread of multinational products can often bring in its wake a loss of jobs, as people turn to buying the new brand, perhaps thinking it more glamorous than the one they are used to. This eventually puts old-school craftspeople out of work.
Finally, tourism numbers may also be affected, as travellers become disillusioned with finding every place just the same as the one they visited previously. To see the same products in shops the world over is boring, and does not impel visitors to open their wallets in the same way that trinkets or souvenirs unique to the particular area do.
Some may argue that all people are entitled to have access to the same products, but I say that local objects suit local conditions best, and that faceless uniformity worldwide is an unwelcome and dreary prospect.
Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children).
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It has been suggested that high school students should participate in unpaid community services as a compulsory component of their education. While many colleges already offer optional work experience, making community service mandatory would provide students with invaluable skills and experiences that prepare them for the future.
One major benefit of community service is the opportunity for students to develop essential life skills. By volunteering, students improve their communication, teamwork, and time management abilities while fostering organisational and problem-solving skills. These experiences are crucial for personal and professional growth but are often missing from teenagers' lives today. Many students spend their free time passively on activities such as watching TV or playing video games. Involving them in community service would encourage more meaningful and productive use of their time while instilling a sense of responsibility.
Compulsory community service would also enhance students' employability and appreciation for work. Practical experience gained through volunteering could be highlighted on CVs, helping students stand out in competitive job markets. Additionally, by engaging in unpaid work, students would gain a deeper respect for the effort involved in earning money, developing better financial habits and a more practical approach to spending.
Another compelling advantage is how community service promotes a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. Structured volunteering provides students with active and purposeful ways to spend their time, reducing their hours spent in sedentary activities. Moreover, it can prevent boredom, which is often linked to risky behaviors or even youth crime. By engaging students in meaningful tasks, community service could reduce idle time and foster a sense of purpose, benefiting both the students and society.
Finally, volunteering teaches empathy and social responsibility. By working with diverse groups, students gain a broader understanding of others' challenges and develop compassion. These experiences can inspire them to contribute positively to their communities, fostering a generation of proactive and socially aware citizens.
In conclusion, making community service compulsory in high school would not only equip students with critical skills but also promote healthier lifestyles, reduce risky behavior, and instil a sense of empathy and responsibility. This initiative has the potential to transform students' lives and enrich society as a whole. It is an idea well worth implementing.
